Relay for Life
Project SmokeLess will be having a Relay for Life Team. The event will be held at Penn State April 25th and 26th. Help us fight cancer by donating on behalf of our team!
Cigarette Butt Cleanup (4/24/08)
Behind the Scenes
Project SmokeLess had been wanting to do a Cigarette Butt cleanup since Fall 2007. The group met with twelve policymakers at Penn State and all seemed to have been singing the same tune, "prove to us the students care, we we will make some changes."
During a meeting in March 2008, Project SmokeLess met with Lloyd Rhoades of OPP and discussed the project with him. The guys from OPP, including Paul Ruskin and Ron Eckenroth, all supported our ultimate goal of a smoke-free campus and lended their services to us. At this point, Project SmokeLess would like to thank OPP for all of their support.
Between March 31, 2008 and April 4, 2008, OPP collected 400 lbs. of cigarette-related litter and various other items. Opp allowed us to take the litter for displaying purposes (to be held on April 24, 2008). Project SmokeLess sorted through the 400 lbs on three separate occasions totaling roughly 6-8 hours.
In addition to having the cigarette butts displayed at the HUB, the group split into two groups to hold the cigarette butt cleanup from 11-12 and 4-5 on the same day.
The mission of the event was to raise awareness of the growing issue of smoking on campus. We believe that this display and the butt cleanup is a great way to educate the Penn State community of the cigarette facts that often get forgotten - ecological and economical impacts.
